The Cowal Elderly Befrienders project is based on two interlinked strands of social support – minibus-facilitated peer-befriending community support and traditional 1-2-1 befriending. We provide services for referred elderly people identified to be at risk of experiencing the negative effects of loneliness and social isolation. For over 29 years we have supported older people to make friends and maintain their independence and involvement in the communities they helped create.
Our outreach staff and volunteers support around 200 elderly people each week by offering a range of group and individual services delivered at home and in the community using our wheelchair accessible minibuses.
We work closely with statutory services (homecare/social work) and community groups (village halls/primary schools) to encourage interaction with all that the community has to offer.
In some cases, we simply provide the vehicle (metaphorically - and physically using our wheelchair accessible minibuses) to allow older people to access the benefits of peer-support; in others, much more input is required.
Last year CEBs worked regularly with 243 referred elderly people across Cowal and Bute. 73% were over 80 and the majority had at least one of the health conditions associated with old age e.g. sensory impairment, mobility challenges, cognitive impairment.
CEBs services are provided at no cost to encourage inclusion and engagement; we are financially supported by donations and grant funding.
