Strength and Balance Classes

Our Falls Prevention / Strength and Balance project is a partnership between Befrienders, NHS Highland and Argyll & Bute TSI. Co-ordinated by our OTAGO-trained Falls Worker, Samantha Jones, Befrienders initially delivered 2 Strength & Balance classes each week, aiming to increase strength and balance, reduce the likelihood of falling and improve overall health.

In addition to the clinical benefit that the classes are known to provide, the community-based approach to the project was designed to introduce a social aspect for clients, providing opportunities for improving social networks and building peer support. After each class, clients have the opportunity to have a drink and a blether with others in attendance, and can access our Information Service, as well as receive relevant advice and information on Falls Prevention and keeping safe in the home.

The usual route to accessing this service is via a referral to the NHS Physiotherapy team. Following assessment, clients are signposted to either a Befrienders or ABTSI class. Each client is entitled to a course of 6 classes free of charge, after which they are welcome to continue attending for a nominal fee of £3.00 per class.

Strength & Balance classes are not considered part of our "core services", and as such a levy for transport is made: £3 return within Dunoon, and £5 return outside of the town (limited to the boundaries of Toward to the South and Strone to the North).

Due to demand for the Strength and Balance classes, and the necessity to restrict attendance to small groups for safety reasons, we have been running an additional private class on a Thursday since Autumn 2016.
